LIKE A PRECIOUS PEARL
The Sanctuary of Loreto is a majestic construction that was built over three centuries to welcome pilgrims with a warm embrace. It was built with the help of a series of talented artists, including Bramante and Sansovino.
There is an imposing construction that,"like a precious pearl", was built to provide shelter to the walls of the Holy House of Mary of Nazareth. According to legend, it was miraculously flown to the city of Loreto by angels. Inside this modest home, there is also a statue of the "Black Madonna", patron of aviators, which represents the heart of Marian devotion.
WALK TOGETHER IN FAITH
The precious relic that is kept within the Sanctuary's walls has made this city a place of pilgrimage. These pilgrimages started a long time ago; with news of the first pilgrimage to Loreto dating back to 1319.
Today, it is estimated that around four million visitors come to the sanctuary each year. This demonstrates that this location represents the beating heart of Christianity. Traces of this eternal devotion can be seen in the two furrows running across the entire marble pedestal that surrounds the holy house which have been formed by the knees of followers of the faith.
ART TREASURES
Loreto is also a city full of culture and artistic masterpieces. A large Art Gallery was set up in the Apostolic Palace to exhibit admirable works, such as the masterpieces of Lorenzo Lotto and Pomarancio.
The characteristic town centre is built upwards and it is full of ancient streets filled with shops and workshops.

Curiosity

Our Lady of Loreto is renowned for the dark colour of its face, reason for which it is also called the Black Madonna. This peculiarity is due to the smoke that came out of the oil lamps or candles, which were always lit within the walls of the Holy House.
